I'm not sure if Microsoft has restored build 2015-11 to windows 10 media creation tool. build 2015-11 was pulled pretty soon after Microsoft released it via MCT last month (replaced with RTM). RTM doesn't accept win7/8 keys. you will need build 2015-11.
Why would they remove the ability to use Win 7/8 keys? This would force users to install Windows 7 / 8 and then upgrade to Windows 10. Seems like a lot of extra work for no reason...
I'm downloading using the media creation tool now to test. I didn't know MCT can download latest build.
Not that it matters now. Windows 10 doesn't like a number of programs I use or my sound card. After spending three days trying to get it to work, I just reinstalled 7. On the plus side, 10 is registered to my computer so i can upgrade at a later date.
@adrian: they didn't remove the ability. build 2015-11 was pulled from MCT. anyway I just googled and 2015-11 is now available again via MCT. @zy: yes 2015-11 is build 1511... hahahaha sorry for the confusion.
If you don't have that build but already have Win10 activated for your machine, just 'skip' the enter product key part. Once you're on desktop, it should automatically activate itself. ...At least that's what it did for 2 machines of ours in the house...
So in the future, if you upgraded on motherboard, you need a new key because there's no windows 10 key?
I have already download it, but there's no way to verify what I have downloaded. Any md5? Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
Anyone can just update to Windows 10 now. Even when upgrading from a... urm... hmm... "you know la"... Windows 7 install. It will validate itself after Windows 10 is installed.
Actually, do you guys know how Windows 10 knows when a Windows 7/8 PC has been upgraded before? Is the certification done on Microsoft's end, or do they insert a SLIC (or something similar) into the drive? Just wondering if I can swap out an old SSD for a new SSD after the upgrade, and install Windows 10 fresh.
That's the question, isn't it? How are they certifying the SLIC or registration code for the system? And what kind of upgrade will require a recertification?
