I want to get Mrs. Ishtim a new P&S cam for upcoming trip. What P&S do you use? What P&S would you choose if you were to get a new one today? Why? Thanks!
More of the compact type, like Trin has... She won't be adjusting many manual settings, but I like decent low light performance when you need it. IS is sure a plus and a wide range of zoom is good too. Movies are good, but HD is not a requirement. I will probably get an underwater housing for it as the trip includes some snorkleing and maybe helmet dives.
Budget? $300 is upper end, especially if I have to add for housing. *goes to check out specs* OK looks like S90 is $340 and housing is $170... Makes the D10 look pretty inviting at $280, but all I've read say soft corners especially at low ISO. Any experience with canon housings for underwater?
How much did he/she pay for it? I'm interested in it too. Seems worth buying a compact camera as one would be more likely to carry that around, instead of a DSLR. Plus it can record full HD videos, and take photos/videos underwater to boot!
That's pretty reasonable, considering the stuff it can do. San San has a similar model. An earlier one that isn't waterproof. It's very useful - can even do panorama on the go!
Pulled the trigger on the Canon S90 (manual settings for me/ auto for wife )and U/W housing. I went a step further and also got the Japanese Inon wet lens and mount that produces 100 degree wide angle FOV underwater and 179degree fisheye above water. Now it's hurry up and wait for delivery. Pics to follow...
SShhhhhhh! (USD) S90 $340 U/W housing $170 Wet lens/mount/hood $450 Ballast $25 16GB SDHC $45 _________________________ $1030 About half of which (for wet lens) I had saved up from selling unused astrophotography stuff... Still need dessicant pouches and carrying case. I have to keep justifying the $$$ to myself by thinking all the cool things I should be able to do with it. Now I have to find a nearby swimming pool for setup and testing. Forgot to mention... the day after I ordered the stuff, a friend of my wife offered to loan us a Panasonic u/w ready camera for the trip :brickwall:
lich, no. hard worker, yes. Did I mention my 300D is 6 years old. Ok.... I really stole it from this dead guy lying in the street.
