No. Instead of averaging the results, I am taking the BEST result possible for the CPU at that clock speed. For example, if there are three submissions of an Intel Core i7-920 CPU running at STOCK speed, but each with different combinations of motherboards, memory speeds and memory sizes, I will post the results of the fastest Core i7-920 system. But if someone submits a Core i7-920 that is overclocked, I will add that separately.
x264 HD Benchmark 3.06 The new x264 HD Benchmark 3.0 is here! This is the improved version of the x264 HD Benchmark 2.0 benchmark which has become a standard CPU benchmark for Tech ARP as well as many other hardware enthusiasts. The new x264 HD Benchmark 3.0 ups the ante by using the latest r1342 x264 encoder as well as other changes under the hood. This makes the x264 HD Benchmark 3.0 the new best tool for testing the full capabilities of modern multi-core processors. Do note that due to the changes, the results from x264 HD Benchmark 3.0 are NOT comparable with results from older versions of the benchmark. In addition to the release of the benchmark, we will be compiling benchmark results for this new version. So please contribute your new benchmark results to this project! Check out the latest results! Link : x264 HD Benchmark 3.06
This has been overclocked to 2.91 GHz, right? The results look abnormally high. It is as if Turbo Boost had been enabled.
No that is with all settings in the BIOS set to defaults except for Turbo Mode disabled and SATA ports set to AHCI. For whatever reason the P7P55D board runs the processor at a slightly higher default speed. I used to have an MSI board that did the same thing back in the P4 days. I'm not an overclocker, never have been, just don't see the benefits in a day and age when an off the shelf processor can handle HD encoding of a 720p source in real time.
Just for comparison, here are my results with Turbo Mode enabled on my board. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Results for x264.exe r1342 -------------------------- encoded 1442 frames, 97.29 fps, 3882.95 kb/s encoded 1442 frames, 98.28 fps, 3882.95 kb/s encoded 1442 frames, 97.98 fps, 3882.95 kb/s encoded 1442 frames, 97.55 fps, 3882.95 kb/s encoded 1442 frames, 28.17 fps, 3995.84 kb/s encoded 1442 frames, 28.00 fps, 3997.15 kb/s encoded 1442 frames, 27.89 fps, 3994.49 kb/s encoded 1442 frames, 27.90 fps, 3992.55 kb/s System Details -------------- Name Intel Core i7 860 product System Product Name Name NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 Codename Lynnfield Codename G92 Specification Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80GHz Core Stepping B1 Technology 45 nm Manufacturer (ID) A-Data Technology (7F7F7F7FCB000000) Manufacturer (ID) A-Data Technology (7F7F7F7FCB000000) Technology 65 nm Stock frequency 2800 MHz Core Speed 3050.7 MHz Northbridge Intel DMI Host Bridge rev. 11 Southbridge Intel P55 rev. 05 CAS# latency (CL) 9.0 RAS# to CAS# delay (tRCD) 9 RAS# Precharge (tRP) 9 Cycle Time (tRAS) 24 Command Rate (CR) 2T Memory Frequency 693.3 MHz (2:10) Memory Type DDR3 Memory Size 8192 MBytes Channels Dual Windows Version Microsoft Windows 7 (6.1) Ultimate Edition (Build 7600) Number of processors 1 Number of threads 8 Number of threads 8 (max 16) L2 cache 4 x 256 KBytes, 8-way set associative, 64-byte line size Instructions sets MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, EM64T, VT-x Package (platform ID) Socket 1156 LGA (0x1) Temperature 0 49°C (120°F) [0x31] (SYSTIN) Temperature 1 49°C (120°F) [0x62] (CPUTIN) Temperature 2 37°C (98°F) [0x4A] (AUXTIN) Temperature 0 47°C (116°F) [0x34] (Core #0) Temperature 1 43°C (109°F) [0x38] (Core #1) Temperature 2 42°C (107°F) [0x39] (Core #2) Temperature 3 43°C (109°F) [0x38] (Core #3) Temperature 0 37°C (98°F) (GPU Core) Also, a screen shot of CPU-Z while running the benchmark. Seems like the board runs the processor at a slightly higher FSB, which when multiplied by 21 (the default multiplier) gives you the difference in default speed. As you can see with Turbo Mode on my board is running at 3.05 GHz not the specified 2.93 GHz. Again, this is the 5.4 Mhz difference in FSB multiplied by the Turbo Mode multiplier of 22.
I've got a Core i7 860 as well. With Turbo Mode I got 2-3 fps more. He has x22 and I have x21. That's because that screenshot of CPU-Z was taken with Turbo Mode on. With Turbo Mode off my max multiplier is 21x just like yours. The point of that screenshot was to show that under load my FSB is 5 MHz higher than default. My FSB ranges from ~128-138 Mhz depending on load. I'm sure its a BIOS setting but I don't know which one as this ASUS board has about 100 custom settings. My previous 3 boards have been Intel and they are crap for custom BIOS settings and hence easy to setup but with the ASUS there are so many settings I'm not sure which one allows the FSB to move around like that. That said, my posted results are at my boards default speeds with Turbo Mode off and all BIOS settings at default (other than those previously mentioned). No overclocking.

Oh, it's just that your results are much faster than the 3.33 GHz Core i7-975 even though it's just running at 2.91 GHz.
ASUS has an auto-overclocking (AI NOS, AI, etc.) feature. For accurate results, you have to disable it. I'm not sure but it could be the reason why your scores are so high.
I think I got it. It wasn't the BIOS settings, I disabled every setting I could find in the BIOS that related to FSB or the CPU and the processor still runs at 2.91 GHz under load. I can't figure it out. But what I did figure out was why my speeds were higher. I searched my system for other instances of x264.exe and found out that I had a different version of x264.exe in my SYSTEM32 folder and I think it was using that version for some reason. So once I deleted that file and re-ran the tests then my scores came in line. It didn't occur to me because my results file read just like everyone elses, "Results for x264.exe r1342". Thanks for the results, JFC and everyone else! Do keep posting your results! I will update the table with the best results for each processor.
x264 HD Benchmark 3.07 The new x264 HD Benchmark 3.0 is here! Link : x264 HD Benchmark 3.07
